I recently took some friends to Skydance Skydiving (Davis, CA) to do a tandem skydiving for the first time and I recorded the entire extreme experience. One of the first things this experience showed me was that people have many questions about skydiving– especially if they are about to skydive for the first time!
They asked me if they could breathe during the tandem; what they should do to land their parachute; if they could control the parachute and so on. To answer all those questions, I wrote about a few Skydiving Myths to help offer a good perspective of what happens when you skydive: what is real and what is a myth.
The Moment: Tandem Skydiving
The day arrived, and we all gathered at Skydance Skydiving in Davis, CA. I took my friends there because it is the place I regularly go skydiving. Also helps when you know the staff. Once we got there, I enjoyed the afternoon with them, taking pictures and getting some footage on the ground to add to the video I promised to deliver.
They attended the ground school video class and they spoke with an instructor who helped them to understand what would be happening during their first tandem skydive. After that, we divided our group into 4. We had 3 people skydiving each time, and I had the chance to jump with one person in each group.
All my friends loved the experience of jumping from an airplane for the first time. Everyone was super excited about their first tandem skydive. It was great to have the opportunity to be around before and after the tandem jumps. I got so many good vibes out of it. I can only describe it as INCREDIBLE.
There is an option at my Drop zone, Skydance Skydiving, that the tandem student can buy a second tandem jump with discount/special price, but you have to buy it on the same day you did your first jump (it doesn’t expire). I took 12 people for their first time skydiving. Guess what? Five, yes, five of them bought the second tandem jump right after landing! I was so stoked about it.
My Advice: Invite your Friends to Skydive
Try to bring your friends to your home DZ. People love skydiving, and they deserve to know how we feel and why we do it so many times. Also, it is vital for our community that more people get into skydiving. When we increase the number of people in the sport, everyone benefits from it.
Besides that, jumping with a friend or being in the same plane with your friend who is going to jump is beyond extraordinary. Everything in skydiving requires you to be 100% present, and the experience that you are introducing them to is priceless.
Get people in the sky, go jump with them, and wait for them in the landing area. The expressions of happiness are contagious.
I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to skydive that I just want to share it with other people and more people and more again. People need to see what we do and why is so unique (and habit-forming).
A tandem skydive is an experience that will be with you forever. Whenever someone asks you, “What is the craziest thing you have ever done?”, you will for sure recall the day you jumped out of a perfectly good airplane.
I like to get involved in these kinds of experiences because I’ll always be a part of that moment and part of those people’s lives. It’s incredible to look in their eyes when they are in free fall or right after they get back on the ground. Their faces are so happy, so exhilarated. The adrenaline they feel and the way the tandem students express their feelings when they start talking after landing is something priceless and unforgettable.
I also want to thank you Skydance Skydiving Center for helping us to realize this dream. The tandem instructors, cameras, and pilots are all amazing. The ground staff always do a great job helping us to be in the sky. Thank you all.
